Chapter 10 - Nicky

I plop down in my office chair, shocked and, oddly enough, hurt by Adelmo’s rejection. Never did I think that he’d refuse me after the connection we had. You refused him first! growls an angry voice in my mind, but I silence it. No. I didn’t refuse him. I told him that he didn’t own me. There’s a difference. But my attempts at assuaging myself are futile, and I distant mindedly rub the ache in my chest. My stomach begins to revolt, causing me to run down the hall and into the nearest restroom.

Heaving over the toilet bowl, I lose my lunch for the third day in a row. Sweat rolls down between my shoulder blades. Once my stomach’s completely empty, I lift myself up and flush the toilet, staggering over to the sinks to wash my face and rinse the disgusting taste of bile from my mouth. My face looks clammy and dull, and my eyes are bloodshot from the lack of sleep I’ve gotten recently. Shaking my head in disgust, I wash my face again and dry my hands before returning to my office to grab my purse and lock up. As I walk to my car, I decide to stop at the pharmacy on my way home to get something for this rather excessive nausea. It’s nearly 7 p.m.; I hope that I can catch the pharmacist before they close for the evening.

I pull into the small parking lot of the pharmacy down the street from my apartment and pray to whatever god will listen that the pharmacist hasn’t decided to close shop early. I sigh in relief when I notice someone still putzing around behind the pharmacy counter. The small woman looks up at me with a smile.

“Hello, there. It’s Nicky, right?” she asks affably.

I nod and smile at her, remembering her from my last visit. “Hi there. I was hoping you’d be able to help me out.”

“Sure, what do you need?”

“Well, I’ve been really nauseous and throwing up pretty frequently recently. Is there anything you can give me to help with that?”

She taps her lip in thought. “Hmm, how long has this been happening for?”

“Nearly two weeks, but it’s gotten worse the last three or four days.”

She nods decisively before holding up her hands as if in defense. “Hear me out.” The words cause me to raise my brows. “Nausea alone isn’t a sure sign, but have you had your period recently? Two weeks is a long time to be nauseous.”

I can feel the blood drain from my face, and I shake my head half in denial and half in answer.

“Before I recommend anything for the nausea, I think that you should really take a pregnancy test,” she says. “Pregnancy changes what you can and can’t take.”

“I see,” I say, still in denial, as she hands me a small box. “Is there anything I can grab that would be OK regardless of the results of the pregnancy test? I’d hate to have to make an extra trip …”

She nods at me before I finish speaking.
